Issues affecting children and young people in Mozambique
- Mozambique has the eighth highest prevalence of HIV and AIDS in the world, with 11.5% of 15 to 49 years-old testing HIV positive.
- One in every two girls is married before the age of 18. This puts children at high risk of abuse, dropping out of school and high rates of adolescent pregnancy.
- An impressive increase in access to education has been observed since 2014, however still half of children who start primary education drop out.
- Poverty is the main determinant of child vulnerability. More than half of country’s population still live in poverty.
